So many people often wonder is it possible to have a side job and a full time job at the same time. The simple answer is yes of course you can have both. For me, before I started Life with a Budget, I was working full time at a software company and working on a different blog called Petite in Paris. While my main job was in the software company I was able to juggle my blog on the side and receive additional income from it.
Was it easy? Of course not, if it was everyone would do it. Would I do it again? Of course. I loved every minute of it. The truth is you can have both and do anything you set your mind to. So if you want to have a side job and a full time job at the same time you can do it! I’ve listed a few things that have helped me accomplish my goal of having both a full time job and side hustle. Below are my tips and tricks for managing a side hustle that brings in 5k a month in revenue while working a full time job.
Time Management is Key
One of the most important keys to be successful at having a side job and a full time job at the same time is time management. I know that it seems obvious that time management would be important, but this is really fundamental for having both. You may be wondering when will I have time to do both?
Well I’m glad you asked, for me, I was writing and learning how to edit on the metro on the way to work. I worked through lunch on my side project. In addition, I gave up opportunities to go out with friends to learn everything I could about what I was doing. I strongly believe that if you are dedicated you will make time for the things you love. In addition, I limited my TV intake time to 1 hour a day, and I do it while working out. I have a thirst for knowledge and in my free time, I love researching, learning and trying new things.
Understanding Your Limits
Another fundamental step to have a side job and a full time job is to understand your limits. Sometimes, I definitely have extremely high expectations for myself. It’s important to know that you are not limitless and if you don’t get something done today, it’s okay it can get done tomorrow. The last thing you want to do is add unnecessary stress. The less stress the easier you can think things through and make sound decisions. So yes, it is possible to have a side job and a full time job at the same time, but don’t forget that you have limits.
Turn A Hobby into a Profitable Business
I always ask people what they love doing? Is it traveling? Is it photography? Then I ask them would they be willing to sell their photography? Because there are tons of sites such as Getty images, Shutterfly that you can sell your images and make a profit. Or even start a blog.
It took me a little over 3 years to start generating $5k a month with my blog, and it also took me a few months to start generating $500 a month with reselling my products. With patience and dedication, you can start turning your hobby into a profitable business. Remember things take time, don’t get impatient and give up!!
How Long Does it take for a Side Hustle to Become Your Main Job
When it comes to deciding how to decide if your side hustle should become your main job is simple, ask yourself these questions. Are you projecting positive growth month over month? Are you on track to surpass your current salary? If you didn’t have your current job, do you think you can make your side hustle grow faster? These questions are all important to answer before you decide to commit. Also, I always tell people that you’ll probably have to explore private health insurance which will be an additional cost.
